Robert Macaire notaire (Caricaturana #5, published in le Charivari in 1836) Daumier had been familiar with the world of notary ship ever since his youth, because for some time he worked as a clerk at a solicitor’s office. The slippers and the richly ornamented long robe were typical of the Parisian, money-thirsty notaries of those days.

The legal profession was a lucrative one during times where criminality was soaring amongst the growing Parisian proletariat, and suppressed harshly by the bourgeoisie who enriched themselves at their expense
