Andre Mantegna (1431-1506) The painter Squarcione adopted Andrea when he was only ten years old and trained him in a strictly classical, precise style. Although he soon freed himself from the bonds of his teacher, Mantegna continued to focus on antiquity. In Padua he met the Tuscan Donatello and learned a great deal from the powerful renaissance style of the old master. He remained true to his own interpretation however with its dramatic linear style, cold colours and impressive perspectives. Mantegna developed into one the most famous monumental painters of his generation and Rafael’s father called him the greatest of painters. | ||

Camera degli Sposi Inscription with putti (1465-1474) The decoration of the Camera degli Sposi in the Doge’s palace in Mantua is regarded as Mantegna's masterpiece. It was commissioned by the Gonzagas, with whom he served as court painter from 1459. In this rectangular room, Mantegna painted his own architectural reality in a complicated composition of arches, pedestals, pillars, heavy curtains and in the ceiling the famous "Oculus", an opening with a view of the painted sky. The fresco is one huge, fascinating trompe-l'oeil. "The inscription with putti" is painted on one of the walls above the door. The viewer sees the top cherubs from below, suggesting an extreme perspective of depth. |
